Storytime!
In American elementary schools, there’s a reading time where teachers read picture books to students while engaging in questions and answers. During this time, the teacher reads aloud while asking questions, encouraging children to imagine and freely inquire about word meanings, pronunciations, and events occurring in the story. However, it’s not easy for Japanese children to continue reading English picture books designed for native English-speaking elementary students at home in the same “effective” way. Therefore, to help children in my English conversation school develop a habit of reading short novels intended for American elementary students, I started a reading class called “StoryTime”! This class is modeled after my own experience when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, where American elementary school teachers would sit and read books to us. Now that it’s available online, I hope people from distant locations can participate too. It’s a pressure-free reading class.
