StoryTime Class

A few months ago, a former student came to my English conversation school with exciting and surprising news. He had achieved a score of 8 points on the IELTS, an English proficiency test required by universities in America and Europe! An IELTS score of 8.0 is nearly equivalent to EIKEN Pre-1 or 1st grade, or a perfect score on the TOEIC. Remarkably, he accomplished this while still in high school. After hearing about his learning method, I was reminded once again of the effectiveness and importance of reading in English. As you know, reading has a significant impact on language acquisition. In American elementary schools, there’s a reading time where teachers read picture books aloud to students while engaging in Q During this time, the teacher reads aloud while asking questions to encourage children to imagine and freely inquire about word meanings, pronunciation, and events in the story. However, it’s not easy for Japanese children to consistently practice this “effective” reading method at home with picture books designed for native English-speaking elementary school students. So, to help children at my English conversation school develop a habit of reading short novels intended for American elementary school students, I started a reading class called “StoryTime”! This class is modeled after my own experience when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, where an American elementary school teacher would sit and read to us. Now that it’s also available online, I hope those from distant areas can participate as well 😊
