We offer make-up lessons on Sunday 4 times a year that students can join if they miss class. We can make arrangements for longer absences on a case by case basis.

We encourage students in our Kindergarten and Apple courses to try English first. Phonics and Magnolia classes are designed to be English immersion courses, so students and teachers should speak only English unless there in an emergency or a dangerous situation. Private lesson and adult students can choose whether they would like the teacher to use Japanese in class.

Yes. We expect Magnolia 1 students to be able to read and write from the first lesson, so phonics is important. Students who have previous English experience or can demonstrate mastery of basic phonetic reading can test out of one or both stages of phonics and join Magnolia 1.

We have several options. Apple course is designed so that students of any level can join at any time. Students who want to get a head start on reading can join Phonics 1 if they are 6 or older. Of course, 年少~年長 students can enjoy our kindergarten course regardless of their level!

Of course. We will assess your child’s English level at your trial lesson and work together to choose an appropriate class.

Students will study over 350 English words in the phonics stage 1 and 2 practice videos and in class. Please remember that the focus of Phonics Class is reading, not vocabulary memorization.

No. Phonics is a reading class that teaches students to use the sounds of English letters to decode words that they may not already know. Most Phonics students do learn quite a lot of new vocabulary, but it is not the focus of the course and we do not test students on their vocabulary.

The teacher will explain the special requirements for each class, but all students should at least bring a pencil, and eraser and any textbooks that they are using. Students are also welcome to bring their water bottle.

Students are welcome to have food in the study cafe or the lobby, but please ask the teacher before having food in the classroom.

Yes! Family lessons can be scheduled at the normal private lesson price. We can create whatever your family needs. We have helped many families prepare to move abroad, so let us know what we can do for you.

Lessons are either 50 or 60 minutes, depending on the course.

Start by scheduling a free taiken lesson! After the short demo lesson we will help you decide which class is best for you and you can submit your application.

We always do our best to match students with the class that is going to be good for them. In the event that a student is struggling, or that the coursework is too easy, please request a meeting and we will discuss the possible solutions.

No. We do not charge any mandatory fees. We have a voluntary membership program, Garden Club, that students can enroll in yearly to receive discounts on tuition and other benefits.

We do not require any contracts. Students can join or leave as they please.

Except for private lessons, our system guarantees 44 lessons per school year (April~March). This results in an average of 3-4 lessons per month, though some months may have 2 or 5 lessons. The lesson schedule is set out on our calendar, which is available for free on the lobby counter, attached to our front door, and on our website at https://www.englishgardenschool.com/events.

Payments are due by the 25th of the prior month.

We accept bank transfer, cash, and most credit and IC cards. We can provide you with bank transfer information for our Joyo Bank account.

In principle, students pay for lessons on a month-to-month basis. We have a flexible system regarding free makeup lessons, so please ask us if you have a planned absence.

Unfortunately, we do not offer a system for taking a month-long leave of absence. If you need to take an extended break, it will be treated as a withdrawal from the school. You are welcome to re-enroll upon your return, subject to class availability. We encourage students to communicate their needs regarding extended breaks as early as possible so we can discuss the situation.

There is no minimum number of private lessons. However, we cannot guarantee scheduling of lessons that meet less than once a week.

Our events are large, and are often held outdoors. We expect parents to either attend with their children or arrange other supervision.

Almost always! We will include information about attendance and pricing with each event.

Yes. We have 4 parking spaces available exclusively for English Garden customers. Our parking lot can, however, get quite crowded at busy times so please be courteous.

We do not have specific parent open-class events, our classes are always open to parents. We may ask that parents join the class with their child for a short period in the case of behavior problems.

We do our best! We have bilingual staff available at certain times, and we can schedule meetings with biligual as needed.

We built the cafe to give students a place to study, read, or work. We encourage you to come in at any time during our normal business hours, enjoy free coffee and hot drinks, and work on whatever you like. Please be respectful of others and clean up when you are finished.

Sometimes. Sometimes our school mascot dogs, Lucky and Chance, come for a visit. They are very friendly, but we understand that they are also very big. If you or your child have a fear of dogs, or an allergy to dogs, please let us know so that we can accomodate you.

Yes, but please let us know before hand. Most of our customers love animals, and our pets are very friendly to people, but animals can be unpredictable so let’s be careful.

We expect our students to understand and follow our behavior guidelines. Please schedule a meeting if you have concerns about classroom behavior or student performance. If the teacher is having a problem, they may schedule a meeting to discuss the behavior or ask the parents to attend class with their child.
